Did you just finish your medical assistant degree? If yes, then you can already work as a medical assistant and you are expected to do certain jobs which will be useful and beneficial to the community of medical professionals. After all, medical assistants are reliable health care workers that perform those clinical and administrative tasks on behalf of doctors when the latter happen to be so busy. One can say that they have a great career ahead of them especially in these times.

This is where the importance of getting a medical assistant certification or accreditation comes into play. Although there isn’t any type of law that requires medical assistants to be licensed, registered or certified, almost all of those health care workers choose to become certified. The biggest reason is the fact that most employers these days require medical assistant accreditation. Come to think of it. If you applied for a job at a certain hospital or clinic along with another applicant who is already certified, who do you think the employer will hire? Of course, they would go for the certified candidate.

You can liken the accreditation to the approval of the Food and Drugs Administration. Most consumers would go for food items that are FDA-approved instead of the ones that are not. This is because they are assured that those food items have passed the standards of FDA and are therefore safe to eat. This is quite the same when you are already a certified medical professional. You are basically showing your employer that you have high proficiency and that you are well capable to do the job. Don’t you know that there are great career advancements for certified medical assistants? You can get promoted to clinical supervisor or office manager. You can even have teaching positions.

But before you become certified, you know you have to get and pass the medical assistant certification examination. Certification examinations and programs are being offered by several organizations including the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Association of MA (AAMA), the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and others. Do your very best to acquire that particular certification. While you’re at it, you may also want to look more into ASCP certification and perhaps consider getting it as well.

The ASCP is an acronym for the American Society for Clinical Pathology, which has been offering a wide range of certifications for specialists, lab technicians and technologists. You may try getting that particular ASCP certification for yourself. That will really give you an edge over the other candidates.

Once you have been certified, you should keep in mind the jobs that you should do well and right. Common responsibilities include filing and updating medical records, scheduling patient appointments, filling out insurance forms, assisting doctors during exams, recording medical histories, preparing patients for medical procedures like x-rays and exams, removing stitches and others.
