pain relief acupuncture works. This is the finding of a recent study (May 2010) by scientists at the Rochester Medical Center, New York.

Acupuncture is one of several alternative healing systems that are not based on the principles of orthodox Western medicine, and that has not been for many years an intense discussion and the debate about whether it really works, or simply based on the patient's belief that works to deliver results.

Western medicine is about a health problem directly, hence its heavy reliance on drugs and medicines. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), of which acupuncture is a part, takes a more roundabout route, and believes in healing the body as a whole, rather than just part of it. The balance between body, mind and spirit are given more importance, the proper flow energy or "chi" throughout the body is the way this set right balance.

Acupuncture is perhaps best known in the West the ancient practice of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture Needles are inserted into certain specific points on the body to correct the abnormal flow of energy and therefore recover health. To the Western mind, there seems no reason why this treatment should be no difference at all. Obviously, doing that should not result in a cure of the disease and the patient's return to full health.

But the problem for Western medicine is that all the evidence shows that acupuncture works. And in many cases, this is after orthodox Western medicine could not cure the patient. Of course we can not cure all cases of ill health and disease more than Western medicine can, and supporters of traditional medicine from China seems that this has been used as an excuse by many people in the West to dismiss it as quackery.

Recent Results of Rochester Medical Center have faced the main objection, by orthodox Western medicine, acupuncture, which has always been that the benefits are only psychosomatic. In other words, the patient is convinced that acupuncture work, and the belief that it helps achieve the desired result.

The Rochester team mice legs were sore and they performed acupuncture in the same way you would with humans. The mice, of course, there would be no belief about whether the treatment would work or not.

After treatment the mice were measured the levels of adenosine, a natural painkiller produced by the body when pain is experienced. Increased levels of more than 20 times and the pain was relieved by two thirds, compared with untreated mice as well.

This seems claim acupuncture as a valid alternative treatment health to reduce pain. In fairness, the results of the test animals are not necessarily the same as those obtained from testing in humans. And the Rochester team refused to support a belief in acupuncture needles to rebalance the body's "vital forces" or the correction of a flow of energy to gone wrong.

That last question will be left open once again. But the patient suffering pain is only seeking relief from it. If the flow of "qi" or energy through his body had become unbalanced, but now is back in natural balance is not their main concern. If the pain ceases, or away from the disease, acupuncture treatment has worked and the patient is happy.

The ability of acupuncture to help with pain ways not related, such as helping smokers quit, or help people with fertility problems successful IVF treatment can not be explained by of their ability to release natural painkillers in the body, as critics were quick to point acupuncture.

But this does not detract from these recent findings. Only serves to remind us that there is more to acupuncture acupuncture pain relief.
