An acupuncture point is a spot on your body that contains a concentration of energy.  It is a precise geographic location in the sense that its localization is defined in relation to anatomical indicators of the muscles, tendons, arteries and nervous system. 

The Chinese call it tsiue which means cavity because the principal points are located in a hole.  Because the bodies of patients are always different, it was necessary to establish a unit of measure that could be adapted to each individual.  That unit of measure is the thumb, and more precisely, the distance between the patient’s 2nd and 3rd phalanx of the thumb.

This unit of measure is essential to finding the correct points in acupuncture.  The preciseness in acupuncture is indispensable because many of the points have a very small surface area and sometimes an error of just a few millimeters can compromise the effectiveness of the treatment.

The Chinese were concerned about the accuracy of acupuncture since its inception.  And for this reason, they found a solution while training by building life size statues made of bronze that could trace the exact trajectory of the meridians and their related points.  While training future acupuncturists, they would cover the statues with wax and place pockets of water underneath the wax to mimic the different points along the meridians.  When they tested students, the students had to place the needle and if water squirted out, then that meant that the correct point was located.  Otherwise, the student had failed.

An acupuncture point acts upon the meridians and thereby the organs, the five elements (wood, fire, water, land and metal) and upon Ying and Yang.  Thanks to the discovery of acupuncture points, a map has been created of how to normalize energy throughout the body in order to achieve balance.

For example, if you take the case of someone suffering from bronchitis during the winter.  A Chinese diagnosis would classify it as have cold in the lung and the cause is an excess of Yin (which represents cold) and a lack of Yang (representing warmth).  To treat the illness, all the specific points related to the lung meridian could be touch to disperse the cold concentration to other parts of the body where it won’t cause harm. 

An alternative treatment consists of toning the fire point within the lung meridian that will heat the body up and add Yang (again, warmth) so that the body’s natural immune system can be strengthened.
