If you have been diagnosed with PCOS, TTC can be very difficult. However, it isn’t an impossible journey! It may just take a few more steps than it takes the average person. The first key to getting pregnant in spite of PCOS is to know all your options. Here is a list of the treatment options most commonly used for PCOS. The list is presented in the order that you should try things, going from least invasive to most invasive and expensive.

#1. Lifestyle Changes

The cheapest and simplest way to overcome PCOS might also be the most difficult. As humans, we often have a hard time changing our ingrained habits, especially when others around us are following our old routines. However, changing your lifestyle is the single most important thing you can do on your journey to having a baby in spite of PCOS. In fact, thousands of women have already discovered that this is the only thing they need to do in order to conceive and have healthy pregnancies with this disorder.

The most common issue confronting women with PCOS is excess weight. Those who are overweight are even more hormonally unbalanced and have worse symptoms. PCOS women find that losing even a few pounds can make a big difference, and many women have gotten themselves on regular cycles just by losing weight.

You may already know that weight loss isn’t as easy for you as it is for many people. If you have PCOS, you’re likely to be insulin resistant. This means that a low glycemic index diet is probably your best option. Start by cutting out all sugar and refined carbs. Then, build your new diet around whole grains, low GI fruits, tons of veggies, and lean cuts of meat or vegetarian sources of protein. Adding in exercise a few times a week will make you feel better and will help that weight drop off even more quickly.

#2. Acupuncture

Whether you’re trying to conceive or not, acupuncture has been shown to help many of the symptoms of PCOS. We aren’t sure why, but many practitioners think that this traditional treatment helps regulate the hormones in the body. Often, acupuncture can stimulate a normal menstrual cycle without drugs. Feel free to add this inexpensive therapy into your overall lifestyle change!

#3. Clomid and/or Metformin

Clomid is the first step your doctor may have you take to conceive. This medication is even used for women who don’t have PCOS. It is an inexpensive way to help induce ovulation and get your periods on a more regular track. Metformin is actually a diabetes medication. Since many women with PCOS are also insulin resistant, though, it can really help. This medication helps control insulin levels and helps keep androgen levels down, which can jumpstart period regulation, as well. Be sure to consult your doctor on any drug you are considering before taking it.

#4. Gonadroptins

If the other two medications don’t work, these injected medications will be next. This medication is injected just when your body’s eggs are mature enough to release. It stimulates an almost immediate release so that you can time intercourse more exactly. Since PCOS often involves uncertain ovulation dates and renders many ovulation testing kits obsolete, this can be very helpful.

#5. IUI

This is the least invasive assisted reproductive technique out there. It basically injects sperm directly into the uterus. The reason it’s often a good option for women with PCOS is that it helps get the sperm to the eggs right on time. More often than not, this is paired with ultrasound and LH monitoring and gonadroptins. This technique can also help couples overcome male factor infertility when it’s paired with PCOS.

#6. IVF

This is the last and most drastic step in getting pregnant with PCOS. The success rates with IVF for women with PCOS are only slightly lower than the rates of success for average women. In this procedure, the eggs are harvested and fertilized outside the womb. After a certain amount of time, which will vary depending on clinic, preferences, and technique, the eggs are reinserted into the uterus, where they’ll hopefully take root and become developing fetuses.
