Well known for its use in reducing pain if acute or chronic acupuncture as a viable form of pediatric health care is less common in mind. Today, we explore the use of acupuncture in pediatric health care, specifically as it relates to asthma. To do this we must begin with an explanation of what acupuncture is and how it works from a physiological standpoint. Acupuncture was administered by inserting ultra fine needles into the "points" in the body associated with the mitigation of a particular nuisance.

The average depth of needle insertion IS.3 -. 8 of an inch deep and stay 15 to 20 minutes per session.

So how exactly acupuncture works? From a scientific perspective, acupuncture works with the sympathetic nervous system and circulatory system along with many other physiological systems that regulate the body in certain situations (see the NIH Acupuncture Consensus Statement 1997 for more detailed scientific information.) The common points of acupuncture are in one of 14 major vessels and the points in the same vessel are related through a system of electromagnetic waves known in Chinese as Qi (pronounced chee).

Chinese medicine refers to asthma as the "Xiao Chuan "which translates into English as wheezing and breathlessness. These two presentations are considered separate diseases and treated as such. Often patients with wheeze have difficulty breathing, but the reverse is not necessarily true. The main difference between them is that wheeze is characterized by a "whooping" sound when breathing.

The etiology and pathogenesis of childhood asthma is based on three main factors point of view of Chinese medicine. The first factor is the invasion of agents foreign pathogens. These pathogens can be cold, heat, pollen, cigarette smoke and any other allergens. The first step in the treatment of pathogenic factors outside is an allergy test. If specific allergens are discovered, it is important to rid the household of items that may contain allergens that are concerned. From the perspective of acupuncture, asthma of cold type is represented by the panting, rapid breathing and cough with clear sputum and other signs and symptoms, while heat asthma type is represented by a cough with yellow sputum and full of sticky, among other signs and symptoms. The second factor in childhood asthma is diet. The probability an attack of asthma increases with diets that have large amounts of raw foods, fatty or fried foods, and in some cases, shellfish and other seafood. Recognizing the foods that aggravate childhood asthma in your child and eliminating foods from your diet can be very helpful in reducing the number of attacks. The third factor, from the perspective of acupuncture, is the underlying deficiency. These deficiencies stem from a congenital or chronic diseases that lead to weakness. internal weakness leads to accumulation of phlegm, and metabolism of the body of water is in danger. In this case, mucus production and storage is in the lungs, which become the main body involved in recurrent asthma attacks.

There are many points of acupuncture and herbal formulas that are useful in the treatment of childhood asthma.
