Do you or someone you know suffered a stroke or traumatic brain injury? Maybe you have a child with cerebral palsy or autism. If that person is a close relative or a loved one, you know how debilitating this case may be. Not only can you rob the person of their independence, but her confidence same. As a person struggling to get back to something like its former life, constantly face people who say, "can not do this. It's too dangerous."
Fortunately, help is here. It's called hippotherapy and there is a facility here in South Florida that does it. (Please visit the resource box to find the name and the company's Web site.) The company is actually made up of two floors, a state of the art clinic located in Aventura, which houses, among other things, a gym and sensory, both fixed and dynamic rock climbing wall. second installation Dimensions' is a horse farm, located in Southwest Ranches. It was this institution that I encountered. It consists of about 2.5 hectares, with a stable home to four horses and a pony, two stages and a track, plus a course sensory for kids or adults with sensory disorders. The staff is excellent. I met Maurice, who maintains and prepares the horses and one of the occupational therapists (OT). In total, there are five professional therapists, five speech therapists and two physical therapists at the center. The staff as a whole, looks nice and caring and conscientious. The same can be said The physiotherapist, Jane Burrows.
Jane Burrows, is well qualified in the hippo which has over 25 years experience as a physical therapist. According to Jane, a hippotherapy physical therapy perspective is not only the use of three-dimensional movement of the horse to promote movement in three dimensions on the client. In other words, by placing a person with extra-sensory deficit and balance a horse, that person over time is able to map the progress of the horse, the way the horse move your body, and how the horse moves his hips from side to side, with the ultimate goal of restoring normalcy to the movement of the client.
Jane said that hippotherapy is appropriate for children and adults, but hippotherapy for children is more common. The total number of customers that the facility is hippotherapy, 90% are boys and only 10% are adults.
My first session was Friday, February 29, 2008. Jane put me on the horse, chocolate chip. (For a discussion continued over what happens in the decision on which horse to use for a particular client, please see the following articles in this series.) Jane put me on Chocolate Chip, because it has a larger circumference, which allows a client to maintain balance hippotherapy easier. He said that as my best balance she moved to other horses.
