An alternative health provider uses any drug free health system to provide care. Ted J. Kaptchuk OMD gave me my first understanding of Chinese Traditional medicine. His book, The Web that has no Weaver reveals the 5000 year old history of Chinese Traditional Medicine.
Ted Kaptchuk was born in 1947 and graduated from Columbia University. Later he went to China and earned a doctorate in Oriental Medicine from the Macau Institute of Chinese Medicine in 1975. He served as director of the Pain Relief and Stress Relief Clinic at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston. He is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Law School directing the Asian Medicine and Healing Program, a division for research and education in complementary and integrative therapies. In addition to those duties he lectures around the world.
Kaptchuk tells me that Chinese medicine is holistic. It is based on the idea that no single part can be understood except in its relation to the whole. In Chinese medicine a symptom is not traced back to a cause, but is viewed as a part of a pattern. In order to analyze and prescribe a medicine the whole person and circumstances must be included in the pattern.
A person who is well is “in harmony ” has no distressing symptoms and expresses mental, physical and spiritual balance. When a person has distressing symptoms the physical manifestation and symptoms are only one part of the imbalance. All other aspects of their life and behavior must be added.
The ideas of Chinese Traditional Medicine follow closely the tenets of homeopathy and naturopathy where the totality of mind, body, and spirit symptoms creates the treatment options rather than just a part.
Kapthuk is involved in many studies at Harvard to validate scientifically the holistic side of Chinese medicine.
