The causes of red eyes can often be a mystery. Patients have reported problems with dry eye induced by CPAP machines. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Disorder causes disruption of breathing in short bursts repeated night. The resulting low levels of oxygen saturation in the blood cause daytime sleepiness and fatigue. It is often accompanied by very loud snoring and the affected person may wake up with "air hunger" several times a night. Sleep apnea can be in serious health problems and death if not treated in time. Continuous positive pressure air or CPAP, is used as the standard treatment. CPAP maintains a upper airway open, providing a steady stream of air delivered through a mask or nasal pillows to use while sleeping. Compliance Is frequently reported to be low with the CPAP machine due to various problems. Solving these problems is fundamental to their welfare and the continued use of a machine CPAP.

Eye problems reported with CPAP therapy include dry eyes, red eyes, swollen eyes (the skin around the eyes), and redness of the eyelids and face around the eyes. Any of these symptoms should be discussed with your doctor who prescribed CPAP therapy and if necessary, may request assistance further your optometrist.

You may be inclined to believe that the origin of dry eye, eye inflammation, conjunctivitis appearance, or puffy eyes is caused by an allergy to the mask. Most of the masks today are made of latex and is made of silicone polymers. The incidence of true allergy silicone is almost negligible. Symptoms can be caused by a number of factors.

– A mask too tight can put pressure on the face
– A mask may be too loose causing air to flow through your eye at night causing dry eye and simulate the dry eye syndrome. The main difference is CPAP-induced dry eye will be worse on waking and improved as the day progresses, while the dry eye syndrome usually worsens as the day progresses.
– A broken mask can be lost or defective.
– Worn nasal pillows could start to blow air into your eyes.

Due to a loose lid is lifted the lid exposing the lining of conjunctival tissue. This constant rubbing on the pillow case cause irritation and tissue exposed to any allergens found on the pillowcase. The conjunctival tissue can become chronically inflamed with conjunctivitis Papillary and a red eye on awakening. The treatment of sleep apnea will help to solve the problem, as there will be a reduction in the roll down. No hypoxia and (lack of oxygen) and the mask itself provides behavioral changes in sleep position, and protruding from the face. The treatment of dry eye symptoms remaining remains essential.
– From time to time an individual has already dry eyes, or sleep with eyes partially open leaky masks are more symptomatic. Treatment of primary dry eye syndrome is essential in this case and should be done in consultation with the ophthalmologist.
– Some people may be more sensitive to pressure from the mask under the eyelids of a repetitive and would benefit by using different masks formed in the nights. The setting of a mask is so important can not be an option, your doctor may need to use ointments (usually after removing the mask).
– Treatment of consultation with your eye doctor may be necessary for artificial tears, dry eyes, as tears Thera, some prescription eye drops.
– The optometrist may also prescribe treatment eye mask conjunctivitis induced red eye with eye medications such as Patanol.

Discuss your problems with your doctor. simple measures can be all you need. Readjust the straps of the mask, the replacement of a mask, or change the type of respirator can completely resolve the symptoms of the eye. If unable to resolve their problems after visiting an eye examination with your optometrist should be the next step.
