The mainstream media was quick to pick up especially in the study show negative and bad news as fact. I can personally attest to how results are affected by attitude – for me and as a testimony of the other struggles. From my own experience, this study is absurd.
What the "critics" of the role that the placebo effect and emotions play in healing do not appear realize is that these things can serve as catalysts for sick people to wake up to find treatments that work for them in particular and to take charge of their own health. Without hope, people have nothing. In clinical trials, the passive people take whatever the doctor – or research – prescribed for them. They are not learning to listen to their bodies and to see what is having an effect and what is not. They are giving up their own power to a trial.
Once I attended the Faculty Integrative Medicine here in Tucson and asked to participate in a feedback session. Proved to be a very informative session – not because I heard nothing in particular on the effectiveness of the program. It was fascinating to hear the impressions of others in their treatment. In college, you are offered a proposal for therapies to treat – I got a scheme ranging from acupuncture daily for Watsu (a form of physical therapy, swimming and muscle manipulation). Each recommendation is custom.
People were in this feedback session that had different results with their treatment.
Some thought I was doing wonders, while others felt that there was absolutely no effect. One hundred percent of the population (based on my subjective observation certainly science) who said they were improving were taking charge of their own health and welfare and do what I felt worked for them, while all those who said better or worse were not taking what I like to call the "I fix" approach to wellness. They were taking a very passive approach and were extremely negative the way he talks – many of them spoke of money matters or some other excuse that prevents them from healing. You never know why they were not improving. They simply were not. Very often, they are too depressed to try anything to heal. When I was OK, I remember walking back and forth in my house and play each door – front and back – fifty hundred times a day. This has cost me nothing more than long legs and support much needed exercise. I hope and belief and determination I was going to improve. Without that, I never would have gotten out of bed every day to do these exercises or any other things I tried on my journey to recovery. I would never have gotten out of bed.
I can personally attest to the witnesses who do not recover from a chronic or debilitating. They all had one thing in common. Was entrusted to someone else with their own health and "knew" in their hearts they were dying or getting worse. When I saw allopathic (Western) medicine working is when the "patient" is sure of its subsequent recovery of what doctors did in response to what he was sick. It all told that the prognosis for recovery was excellent if you follow a particular protocol. In other words, it was ultimately up to them to improve. Seemed they know, not something about it.
My single mother had a hip replacement surgery I was unable to attend or to help in person. She opted for an installation recovery than doubled in a nursing home. For several days, she was doing wrong. I even received a letter from the facility to discuss his transfer payment permanent.
I received another letter from an aunt telling her to come home. My mother was only three steps and was not. I phoned, explaining that she was in a nursing home (which had not fully realized this before) and that he would remain there without seeing your home again unless she worked like crazy to recover and go from there. The next day, took thirty steps. Finally, he did leave and returned home where he lives today.
The point of this story is that I have seen the power of "placebo" effect in action, not just in the miraculous power that are in the belief of a sugar pill. Is in their power to make us work – and hard work – to improve. The need for improvement. What scientists and researchers seem to equate to a sugar pill is the most bizarre form of arrogance, like an obese person watching an exercise program from the comfort of your couch in the belief that she will lose weight. Do I believe in the power of the mind to heal? No I think the mind can make a difference in our health and healing? Of course. This is what I always say: action equals negative thinking nothing. But the action is equal to think about the world. Sorry, I have some more healing to do.
