Radicular pain in the leg, often called sciatica, occurs in about five percent of patients with low back pain, and is secondary to degenerative changes occurring in the disc, the disc between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae is the most affected. Divide development in the outer wall of the disc, the annulus, and at some point, perhaps due to sudden stress, breaches of the wall and part of the inner nucleus pulposus protrudes from the crack. This material can be chemically irritants and compress the nearby nerve travel to the leg, creating an inflammatory process in the nerve which is perceived as pain in the patient's leg.
If pain nerve root in the leg is not satisfied in a period of six to eight weeks a spinal surgeon may consider a magnetic resonance MRI to determine the herniated disc with more carefully. A nerve root block, an injection of painkillers, you can try to address the pain down before surgery is considered. Microdiscectomy can be performed to remove the bulging disc with minimal damage and disturbance to nearby tissues. In some cases may be required to open discectomy.
After surgery, the therapist reviewed the notes of operation for the surgeon's instructions and evaluate the patient. The therapist will ask about pain the patient is complaining and check the muscle strength and sensation in the legs.
