It's hard to imagine life without teddy bears. But it was not always so. Part 1 of this story in three parts of this series will guide you teddy bear through the first years after the beginning of 1900. What is interesting to note on the history of the teddy bear, is the fact that its origin was in the same year in two different parts of the world. One in the United States during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt and the other in Germany. This is the story of the bear.
In early 1900, 1902 to be exact, a cartoonist by the name of Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon called "Drawing the Line in Mississippi." Was then-President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby bear that his men had captured and tied to a tree. As the story goes, Roosevelt traveled to Mississippi to help settle a border dispute. To help please the president, his hosts take him hunting, but due to hunting was so poor, his men captured a small bear and the bear tied to a tree for the president to shoot. Roosevelt refused. This story was later captured in a cartoon by Berryman.
After its initial publication in the Washington Post, November 16, 1902, the cartoon created an immediate sensation and was later reprinted in other papers. Including a newspaper in New York. There, this cartoon inspired Morris and Rose Michtom to create a bear in honor of the president's actions. Rose Michtom made a bear called "Teddy Bear" and put it in your window where it was sold immediately. More bears were created and sold quickly. It was not long before the Michtoms could not keep pace with demand. It was then founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company, the first teddy bear manufacturer in the United States. During the course of its discovery, Michtom wrote to the president and asked for permission to use the name "Teddy" in his honor. The president agreed.
At the same time in Germany, Margarete Steiff's nephew was working in her stuffed toy business [Steiff] and produced sketches that were cubs at the zoo Stuttgart. These designs were used to create a prototype of a toy bear. Several months later, Steiff introduced its first bear at the Leipzig Toy Fair. Although European buyers showed minimal interest, there is a growing interest in "Teddy Bear" in the U.S. because of publicity surrounding the president and cub. An American buyer ordered 3,000 bears to be sent to the United States.
In 1906, the United States was in the midst of a teddy bear craze. This would be comparable to the insanity of Cabbage Patch doll in the 1980 Beanie Baby and the latest fashion of the decade of 1990. An American composer JK Bratton created the score for the picnic teddy bear with the letters is provided by Jimmy Bratton. Teddy Bear adventure history books being written and manufacturers teddy bear were the creation of teddy bears that is included in all shapes and sizes. 'S' The apostrophe was dropped from "Teddy Bear" and the word "teddy bear" became the accepted term for this soft plush toy. Steiff also adopted the World "Teddy Bear" of bear products.
Other competitors are up to enter the manufacturing Forray teddy bears, but many did the last test of time. Except one, Gund Manufacturing Corporation, which began in 1906 and has been doing is still creating them today.
In 1926 over England AA Milne, the father of Christopher Robin Milne, from writing stories about the adventures of his son with his teddy bear and other stuffed animals. Father and son made many trips to the London Zoo and there fell in love with "Winnie" a bear orphan. And Winnie the Pooh series was born.
Teddy Bear Story – Part II talk years older between 1920-1940
