What comes to mind when you say "alternative medicine"? Smoke and mirrors? Candles and song? Hippies, perhaps? (Incidentally, I've never seen a hippie with type II diabetes, but is an entirely new article for another time) Seriously, when you think alternative medicine is likely that the herbs medicine, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture and some other things.
Unfortunately, there is something about the term "alternative medicine" that says "no real, "" charlatan "," there must be some kind of trick of the mind "or give the impression that you should look for something that is not" alternative " first.
As a chiropractic physician, I can not speak for acupuncturists, herbalists, massage therapists, etc, other than that it certainly is difficult, peer-reviewed scientific and evidence of current major daily support each of these professions. What I can speak is both sides of chiropractic medicine starting as a patient and continue to receive chiropractic care and practical care for others.
Because of my experiences in general, I'm going to argue that chiropractic should be considered mainstream, not alternative, which concerns the treatment of rheumatic diseases. In medical school could not alleviate extreme pain in her back, so I sought chiropractic care. It surprised me what happened! Of weeks, my pain was manageable.
Because of this experience, I have changed my practice from general medicine to chiropractic and never looked back. This does not mean I do not recommend other types of medical care that chiropractic care because we need all types of medicine to help and heal people call "Alternative" to the mainstream.
We need to establish a holistic approach to healing in all areas so we are working together with others. For example, a patient recently arrived with severe neck pain. After examination, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, diagnosis a general practitioner, only missed a week earlier. Of course it is recommended that a cancer specialist that could help to plan treatment to give the best chance of fighting and living with this horrible disease.
If chiropractic really consider alternatives? I think not! This should be the dominant choice for treating musculoskeletal complaints such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain and headaches determined. For those to automatically dismiss anything considered "alternative" as unscientific quackery, snake oil, do some research real.
