Acupuncture is well known for its success in treating musculoskeletal pain, that is pain in the back, hips, shoulders, elbows, etc. Early in my Acupuncture Career, I found that over 90% of my patients with chronic pain had structural imbalances, usually involving the pelvis. One hip might be higher or more forward than the other. I found when treating, if I was unable to correct the structural imbalance, then my treatments would not have lasting results. Soon after my discovery, I read Extraordinary Vessels by Matsumoto and Birch, and learned of a Japanese acupuncturist, Mr. Ito, who treated a variety of conditions by first correcting structural imbalances. When I began using Mr. Ito’s techniques, I found that I had much greater success in treating musculoskeletal pain.
The first patient I treated in that style, was a woman who had had back pain for many years. She had been seeing a chiropractor for over a year, and I had treated her a few times. The chiropractic adjustments would realign her pelvis, but the adjustment would only last a few days. My treatments did not affect her structure, but would provide pain relief for a few days. After my first treatment using Mr. Ito’s techniques, her chiropractor was surprised to find that her pelvis was in proper alignment. After just a few more treatments she was showing significant and lasting improvements and soon she was needing treatment no more than twice a year.
A new approach to acupuncture for our modern lifestyle
Most North American acupuncturists primarily study Traditional Chinese Medicine. Actually, ” Traditional” is a bit of a misnomer, as it is a relatively modern approach to acupuncture. In fact, it is traditional herbology theory imposed upon acupuncture. Its focus is more on the internal organs and much less on the meridians and the musculoskeletal system and its use of the meridians is almost exclusively with the twelve primary meridians. Many older Chinese styles, as well as styles from other countries, have a greater focus on the twelve primary meridians as well as the eight extraordinary meridians, and other secondary meridians. Traditional Chinese Medicine is very effective in treating internal problems, especially when Chinese herbs are combined with acupuncture. If you are seeking treatment for pain, particularly for musculoskeletal pain, you may have more lasting results with a style that has more of a meridian approach to acupuncture.
One of the conditions in our modern society that seems to be epidemic, is chronic pain. A recent study that summarizes several other studies from developed countries around the world, found that between ten and fifty percent of the population had chronic pain of three months duration or more. There are several possible reasons for such a large prevalence of pain. One of the most important, in my view, is lack of adequate exercise, combined with too much sitting and poor postural habits. Lack of exercise and poor posture both lead to a weakening of key postural muscles. When this happens, other muscles not suited to the job attempt to compensate for the weak postural muscles. This leads to the structure being pulled out of alignment, as well as over strain of the compensating muscles. In treatment, we need to treat the muscles that are pulling the skeleton out of place. In cases where only the skeleton is treated, the muscles will soon pull the structure out of alignment again. As an acupuncturist, I first carefully observe and palpate the muscles and meridians to determine the patterns of imbalance. Where are the muscles tight or weak? Which meridians are blocked, leading to the tightness and weakness? After a complete examination I use acupuncture to relieve the tight areas and allow energy to flow to the weak areas, thereby encouraging the body back to proper alignment.
How to find an acupuncturist
So, how to find a suitable acupuncturist? When you are interviewing acupuncturists, it is important to ask what styles they have studied and details about their diagnostic process. Diagnosis should include palpating the body, actually feeling the meridians and acupuncture points. Some practitioners only palpate as part of the treatment. In my opinion, an acupuncturist who does not palpate as part of diagnosis is treating a theory, not the person. Once you are being treated by an acupuncturist, talk to them during the diagnostic process. Do you feel they are really in touch with your problems, are both of you making discoveries about your pattern of imbalance that make sense to you? Finally, of course, are you getting satisfactory results from your treatment? In this method of treatment, the patient is actively engaged by becoming aware of the pattern of imbalance in the body through palpation. A dynamic innate healing process is awakened in which the patient and the acupuncturist become a partnership that engenders a speedier recovery. Under the care of a skilled acupuncturist, you should enjoy a healthier, pain free life.
