Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that affects those who have lived through very traumatic events. People with PTSD suffer from high levels of anxiety attacks depression. Normal daily life of people with PTSD also interrupted by episodes of panic or "flashbacks", where recall and relive the emotions and the thoughts they had during the original trauma.
Signs of PTSD
The most common signs of stress disorder traumatic, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, including:
- Chronic anxiety, where victims experience periods of depression and acute panic attacks;
- "Flashbacks" where victims remember fragments of the traumatic event;
- Sleep disorders, where victims experience disturbing nightmares and difficulty sleeping;
- Avoid, avoid victims people, places and situations associated with the traumatic event;
- Dissociation / derealization, where victims feel disconnected of others and the latest events around them, and where it is believed that past or present facts never really happened, and
- Hyper-vigilance, where victims feel the need to constantly be on guard
Some people also suffer from amnesia or memory loss after trauma.
The more persistent and more severe signs and symptoms of PTSD means the longest has been exposed to trauma.
The National Center for PTSD refers to an estimated 8% of the population will experience PTSD at some point their lives. However, she says, women are twice as likely to seek professional intervention for PTSD that children affected by the disorder.
History of traumatic stressors and risk
The American Psychiatric Association, said that PTSD was first considered time as a legitimate psychiatric disorder listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of 1980. However, the APA notes, doctors and people in the armed forces have long been aware of the condition.
The National Institute of Mental Health says that 19% of the soldiers who have fought in a war home with PTSD. The statistic becomes larger with repeated visits of duty, as seen by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq.
According to the NIMH, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is also observed in people who have survived major disasters or accidents, such as the 9 / 11 and Hurricane Katrina. PTSD is also common among people who have been victims or witnesses of murder, criminal or domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Treatment and forecast
A form of posttraumatic stress disorder called complex PTSD is applicable only to persons have experienced a prolonged and severe trauma. C-traumatic stress disorder often comes with other psychological problems, making treatment more difficult. Â
If PTSD is identified and treated immediately after the traumatic event, then usually resolves within 3 months. However, signs of PTSD do not usually appear until 6 months post-trauma. In some cases, as in the case of long-term trauma stress disorder C traumatic, the first symptoms do not appear until several years later.
In such cases, delay the recovery is based on the individual and and the duration of trauma and severity of symptoms. C-can become a chronic post-traumatic stress disorder problem and will require long-term care, but most cases are resolved in a timely manner with the type of intervention.
The prognosis for full recovery of Post-Traumatic Stress after treatment is excellent.
