Well, it’s that allergy time again! There are so many products on the market, but you don’t know the ones that will make you sleepy during the day or, keep you up all night. Which should you get that’s better, a prescription, or, over the counter. “There was a pill I took last year that made me feel sick to my stomach, but which one was it?” Your symptoms actually started when the trees started blooming. But, right now it’s those grasses that are making you feel miserable. Well, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself.

There is a website Aaaai.org/nab that has a daily ranking of allergens. They also include seasonal tree pollens, grasses, weeds,and outdoor pollens. They advise you to stay indoors when the levels become high, but, for some who have to work outside, that’s impossible. Here are some tips that you might find helpful:

Washing your hair out at night will get rid of the pollens you collected during the day. And if you use hair products, such as hair gel, mousse, or spray, pollens tend to get trapped in your hair because of them. Did you know that your nose is like a car windshield? Pollen sticks to it like things stick to your windshield. According to an allergist, Neil Kao, MD, you should use a saline sinus rinse you can find in any drugstore. If nasal washes and antihistamines don’t work, try using a steroid spray like, Flonase.

There are certain triggers which we all know, will bring on the allergies. Dust mites being a big trigger for a lot of people. Dust mites love homes that are warmer than 70 degrees and have a humidity above 50%. By keeping your home temperature in the mid to low 60′s and the humidity between 40-45% makes them leave. You can use barriers such as mattress and pillow encasement. You should also wash your sheets, at least, once a week. A recent study, done at Beth Memorial Hospital in New York, suggests that using Acupuncture to relieve stress, helps also in reducing the inflammation of allergens.

Another trigger of our allergies is the indoor mold, we do not know about. Mold thrives in more warmer, humid weather, too. Just don’t think it’s not there because you can’t see it. Mold can hide under carpets,in your walls, anywhere. The best prevention of this is to use bleach. Bleach and a sponge can get rid of small mold problems. Putting an exhaust fan in the bathroom and laundry room and a dehumidifier in your unfinished basement will dry up the room. Also, you are going to want to change filters. Ideally, you will want a central air conditioning system with a HEPA filter attached. If you don’t have central air, try using a free standing air cleaner in key areas of your home, such as the bedroom.

Another trigger that you won’t like, but have to address is PET DANDER. If you find yourself set off by pets, you may be allergic to their proteins, which are found in animal’s saliva, dander-(dead skin flakes), and urine. The steps you can use to help are, god forbid, banning him from your bedroom. Consider replacing the wall to wall carpeting with hardwood floors, or lineleoum. Neither of these floorings, trap pet’s dander. Always keep your pet groomed by giving him a weekly bath, combing his hair everyday.

There are ways in which you can help yourself and your family by doing these simple things. You didn’t even have to decide which pill to take. Having eliminated some of the problems of allergens, will make your season so much easier to live with.

Finding ways in which to help alleviate problems that we can, is something I like to deal with. On one of my blogs, I specifically write about the foods we should eat to to avoid certain ailments, or, even prevent certain diseases. I feel people need information that does not cost them an arm and a leg. Times are rough enough without us having to give up something we need for something we have to have. We should all have the option of gaining any and all information to help us make the right decision.
