Gastroparesis is a more intimidating name resonant of a condition known as delayed gastric emptying. This is a disorder that causes the stomach take too long to empty its contents into the small intestine, and occurs when the vagus nerve, which controls the speed at which moves food from the stomach into the tract intestinal damaged. When this nerve is damaged, the muscles of the intestines and stomach can not function properly, and this is what causes the movement of slow food, or in some cases, stopped entirely.
There are a variety of conditions and disorders that can lead to the development of gastroparesis.
- Anorexia or bulimia
- Diabetes
- GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- Disorders metabolic
- Nervous system disorders such as Parkinson's disease and abdominal migraine
- Viral infections
Diabetes is the most common cause of gastroparesis. This is mainly due to the changes that people experience when their elevated blood glucose causes chemical changes damage to nerves and blood vessels. In some cases, it is possible that people develop gastroparesis, with no apparent underlying physical cause.
The Symptoms of gastroparesis
There are a variety of symptoms associated with gastroparesis. Some, however, are very vague and could be related to other conditions that are not so serious. Some of the symptoms you might notice if you are suffering from gastroparesis include:
- Abdominal distension
- Abdominal spasms
- Acid Reflux
- An early feeling of fullness when eating
- Acidity
- High and low levels of blood glucose
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Upper abdominal pain
- Weight loss
Alternative treatment options
Fortunately, there are treatments that work for gastroparesis most patients. There are about four different types of prescription drugs that are commonly used in the treatment of this condition. In addition, other options for patients who have been diagnosed with gastroparesis can explore.
One positive step that can result in fairly rapid improvement is to make changes diet. The most important thing is to eliminate high-fat and foods rich in dietary fiber. Your doctor may also recommend that you try to eat several small meals throughout the day to avoid putting a lot of food in the stomach at the same time.
There are also some natural alternatives that have proved very useful for patients suffering from gastroparesis. Acupuncture and electroacupuncture are two procedures recommended for the treatment of gastroparesis. Initial trials with these treatments have produced impressive results, but be sure to consult with a licensed, fully qualified professional before beginning a treatment program.
You can also try taking a supplement of ginger every day, as it has been shown in studies to help speed the process of gastric emptying. The amount Ginger used successfully in studies is 1,200 mg per day and should be divided into three small doses of approximately 400 mg each. Another herbal supplement that has been resulted in the successful Swedish patients is bitter. A spoonful before meals is usually sufficient to improve the process of gastric emptying.
If you have been diagnosed with gastroparesis, you may want to seek advice from an osteopathic physician, or DO physicians may offer alternative treatment options can be very helpful to patients with this type of condition.
