Learning communities have always existed in society, to support the means of sharing and acquiring knowledge. They can have any human endeavour as their point of interest, from hobby based pursuits such as gardening, to professional bodies that circulate formal publications.
Knowledge theory proposes that knowledge is comprised of two elements. First, explicit knowledge, which can easily be expressed or communicated using lectures, books or instructional videos; and secondly, tacit knowledge, which is a higher abstraction and incorporation of explicit knowledge to establish meaning that can not easily be communicated.
Until recently learning communities were seen as a somewhat different approach to formal education methods, which took on a more teacher-centred approach to the transfer of explicit knowledge. It was seen as an individualistic approach; where each student engaged primarily with the teacher on a one-to-one basis.
Trends in formal education methods are now recognising the value of learning communities. The role of the teacher changes from a disseminator of knowledge to the role of a coach to encourage and guide the sharing and acquisition of knowledge via social interaction.
The increasing availability of broadband internet services has greatly facilitated the development of formal and informal on-line learning communities. The acquisition of knowledge in an on-line environment can be thought to progress through five phases (Brook,C & Oliver,R; 2003)
Phase 1 – sharing and comparing of information (ie explicit knowledge)
Phase 2 – exploration of dissonance and inconsistency among ideas, concepts or statements
Phase 3 – negotiation of meaning
Phase 4 – testing and modification of proposed synthesis or co-construction
Phase 5 – agreement statements and the application of newly constructed meaning.
Phase 1 is supported by electronically delivered documentation and instructional videos. The mechanism of the delivery can be portable document format (pdf), DVD or streaming formats exemplified by podcast.
Phases 2 and onwards are supported and facilitated via member forums and discussion boards.
Education institutions and training organisations in Australia are expected to deliver quality services using both on-line and traditional methods efficiently and effectively. The use of professionally produced instructional videos can be a key component to meeting the requirements of both methods.
The benefits are:
- Use of recognised or guest subject matter experts without having to continually deploy them on a regular basis.
- Demonstration of complex or specialist procedures and techniques in a structured manner.
- Assists in maintaining consistency and levels of quality in delivering learning outcomes.
- Ability of a student to replay or revisit the learning material as often as they like to grasp the concepts.
- Learning communities can progress at their own pace.
- Distance/geography is not a constraint.
- Costs of the production can be recouped by offering the material for sale to related organisations.
