A recent case in the news highlights an alarming trend in "alternative"
health care – it is becoming difficult to obtain as and provide
other types of care in the United States. Dr. James Michael Shortt (an MD)
practice of longevity medicine in Greenville, South Carolina, has sued
by relatives of a patient who died under his care, and may be prosecuted
for murder. (AP / LA Times, 09/01/1905).
Information in the media about this case is very unfortunate
instructive if read with a discerning eye. Dr. Shortt is being sued by
is given therapy that is out of "standards of care
medical profession. "This phrase is key. Another cause of action in the
Demand was that Dr. Shortt had told the patient to multiple sclerosis
was caused by a bacteria or virus and the organism (s) might be dead
by infusions hydrogen peroxide. Finally, the coroner and pathologist
examined the patient attributed his death to "complications caused by
of infusion of hydrogen peroxide, which the pathologist said he had "no legitimate
use. . . in the medical literature. "
Data missing in this sentence the murder is that the patient was taking two
prescriptions written by medical mainstream – Tegretol and
Copaxone. If you read the Physician's Desk Reference, there are warnings that
both of these substances can cause exactly the kind of side effects
died of. Hydrogen peroxide not cause these effects. Further
disturbing is that one of these drugs is not approved for use with multiple
Sclerosis. So who is really to blame here? (If you want the technical
details, please contact Dr. Richards directly.)
Dr. Shortt consulted the International Oxidative Medicine Association,
that developed the guidelines used. The group found that Dr. Shortt had
followed its "well established" protocols. These protocols are clinically
established in thousands of patients. Dr. Shortt himself has treated over
1.800 patients with this protocol.
The tunes here that stand out in this unfortunate set of
circumstances are:
1) The legal establishment makes the assumption that the doctor
profession has proven treatments and, more importantly, the only legal
treatments for human health conditions.
If you've been following the news, you know how fallacious this is. Vioxx
is just the latest example of a substance approved for use, which has proved
be fatal. Where was "the literature" when this drug
was approved for use? How achieved without a better acceptance
control? My prediction is we will soon have another scandal in the news –
statins and how they cause failure heart.
2) The medical profession uses its review process to decide
and research information enters the public domain and becomes part of
the accepted "literature."
Any information that is outside the medical paradigm (read the alternatives
therapies) is systematically excluded from the peer review and never
accepted in medical journals. I can give you hundreds of
references documenting the relationship between chronic Lyme disease and more than 350
health conditions. However, the medical profession chooses to selectively
ignore them.
3) Most U.S. research is funded by the
pharmaceutical industry. Natural remedies, which can not be patented
not provide economic incentives for pharmaceutical companies and therefore
ignored – even though they are safer in many cases approved medications.
There are a lot of research in Europe and Asia on the effectiveness
of many herbal remedies that are simply not present here in the U.S.
4) There is a wide variety of medical conditions for the
profession has no etiology. Multiple sclerosis is one. There is research showing many
of these conditions are linked to the Lyme disease parasite, however,
medical profession is busy pretending Lyme's disease is not widely available
There, despite enormous amounts of evidence to the contrary. MS has been
specifically related to the Lyme organism (For example, Fallon BA, Kochevar
JM, A. Gaito, Nields JA, "The underdiagnosis of neuropsychiatric Lyme
disease in children and adults, "Psych Clin North Am., 1998,
September 21 (3) :693-703. From the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University
Medical Center, New York, New York. The abstract references specifically
the connection between Lyme disease and multiple sclerosis.)
Personally, I think the medical profession is fighting for its
credibility, because so many conditions for which no
effective treatment. Whenever possible, the full weight of medical
statutory board and the system is exerted on any doctor
who dares to go against the grain. Dr. Shortt is just the latest in a long line
of distinguished predecessors.
The only solution I see to this dilemma is that the public
informed about what is happening and start a grassroots movement to oppose to
this entrenched power grab. Their health and health care freedom depend
on it.
