“Today’s high-stakes-tests, as they are used in most settings are doing serious educational harm to children. Because of unsound High Stakes Testing (HST) programs, many children are receiving educational experiences that are far less effective than they would have been if such programs had never been born.”
Popham, WJ. (2001) The Truth About Testing, ASCD Publications
Imagine if you will a large company who requires feed back from its customers on how well their service might be working. Receiving working testimonials of success is the best way for them to know that what they are doing is serving their people well. If the large company has a sudden drop in customer success they might look at what can be changed to turn the picture around. This aspect of educational testing gets a little lost in the frenzy. Students who do not learn quickly feel terrible if they get poor grades. The interpretation of the results and the emphasis on students leaves many frustrated and stressed.
Surviving the testing frenzy:
Tip 1:
Keep a healthy perspective. Avoid labeling your student as a result of testing. Kids are constantly changing and growing (yes this includes the brain which doesn’t fully mature till the age of 25!) Give them a chance to grow into themselves.
Look at your kid as a piece of art in the making! Or a stew in the slow cooker! It doesn’t always look great in its formative stages. Who wants to eat raw stew? No one! Nor would you really consider eating it. (unless you were competing on Survivor!) Give your stew time and in the end you will reap the benefits. Show extreme displeasure at the start and your stew might lose its appeal altogether!
The same applies to your kids! Learning has many stages. Testing in the initial stages of learning will not always indicate how well that person is going to progress in life. Attach stressful, meaningless experience to learning and you may put that person off learning for life!
Tip 2:
Have student pro actively understand his/her own strengths and weaknesses.
When we have the skill to look at our own strengths and weaknesses we are more able to cater to our own needs. Learning is powerful when self motivated and directed. When we begin to understand what makes us tick we can be more successful in our learning choices.
Tip 3:
Understand that testing is a momentary assessment of how well a student knows the test content.
Testing is not a permanent measurement of your students learning potential! Most often a test will test for the moment. Studies in retention show that there are many factors effecting retention. Sleep is a major one. Time is another. Diet is also a huge factor effecting brain function. It can take up to 24 hours for information to go from the working memory to the long term memory. Testing prematurely can give a false indication of what a student does or doesn’t recall!
Tip 4:
Develop a “Learning Culture” within your home or school. Find innovative ways to support learning in your home or class. An academic mentoring program can give students and parents the support they need in fulfilling learning needs not being met in other environments. . Learning all year round from a supportive and caring environment is a great experience for all students. It also gives a clear opportunity to emphasize the importance of consistent work habits, supportive environments and engaging activities focussed at the students strengths.
Tip 5:
Don’t make the testing a student problem. Understand that testing is merely an adult measurement of a developing learner that may not necessarily reflect your students ability in the short term.
Take interest in all learning and don’t put undue importance on testing. Research shows that our obsession with testing can result in poor learning habits.
“People will participate in learning that has yielded success for them and avoid those that have produced failure.”
Sousa, D. (2006) How the Brain Learns, Corwin Press
When we release the worry of testing and concentrate on engaging learners in meaningful learning experiences we better the learning outcomes.
Take this time to teach your student the lesson of give and take. We get free school and in return we must give an indication about how effective the system may or may not be. We may not like it but it is what we have available at this time. Preserving your students intrinsic motivation for learning may produce increasingly innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Often those who had the most difficult time at school are those who find educational alternatives for future generations.
You will notice some of these innovations over at [http://www.2Think2Learn.com] Education is entering an exciting phase. Check out what may be available to preserve your students desire for knowledge.
