The early morning mad dash to the bathroom followed by that tell tale retching sound is a clear indication of the classic symptom of pregnancy nausea and vomiting. The term pregnancy morning sickness is a bit of a misnomer. Although the associated nausea and vomiting is greatest in the early part of the day, those who are undergoing the experience can verify that the symptoms can occur anytime. Nausea and vomiting usually starts about one month after conception and lasts, with decreasing frequency, until around the end of the first trimester.
Studies have shown that approximately three-quarters of all pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during their first trimester. Some women experience the more serious form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum. This form causes unremitting nausea and vomiting that can result in reducing the body’s digestive functions, resulting in the woman losing too much weight and becoming dehydrated.
Nausea and vomiting is a complex phenomenon. Although the fundamental causes are being studied, one major contributor is believed to be the sharp rise in hormone levels after conception. Certain conditions have also been identified as increasing the probability of women with the following characteristics experiencing morning sickness;
o Those whose mothers and sisters had severe nausea and vomiting.
o Those carrying multiple embryos.
o Those that experienced nausea and vomiting when taking birth control pills.
o Those with a history of migraine headaches.
o Those carrying a female fetus.
The increased probability for women who are carry multiple embryos is believed to be caused by the much higher levels of HCG and estrogen seen in these cases. The nausea and vomiting associated with taking birth control pills indicates a reaction to increased estrogen, which will be experienced again during pregnancy with similar results. Statistics show that women carrying girls had a fifty percent greater chance of experiencing nausea and vomiting.
The chances of experiencing nausea and vomiting are lessened significantly in women whose pregnancies are likely to end in miscarriage. The lower level of pregnancy hormones, which is either an indicator or a cause of troubled and difficult embryonic development, also reduces the presence of pregnancy hormones that are a major contributor to morning sickness. When these hormone levels are low, the probability of nausea and vomiting is also significantly reduced
As with all human maladies, there are those lucky people that are unaffected. This is true with nausea and vomiting as well. Much to the frustration of morning sickness sufferers, some lucky women, a minority unfortunately, will never experience the pregnancy morning sickness woes. They will go from conception to birth in excellent health, with no uncomfortable symptoms, and will deliver healthy happy babies.
A woman who anticipates her pregnancy can take steps to lessen the chances of experiencing morning sickness. Modifying her diet by snacking continuously during the day rather than eating three large meals can be a great help by keeping the stomach from the extremes of being empty or stuffed. Adequate rest is important. Take naps whenever it’s possible. Some women, whose nausea and vomiting are persistent, have indicated some relief through acupuncture and the use of motion sickness bracelets.
