Often I have the privilege of talking to young women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Your emotions, thoughts and fears can be varied, intense and painful. It is important to feel safe and comfortable to explore their experiences and feelings. It is especially important to learn about the appearance of her pregnancy, which is more disturbing. This varies from woman to woman. For example, it is not uncommon to hear a woman when she told her boyfriend about the pregnancy, he was upset and offered to pay for an abortion saying was not ready for fatherhood and the baby may interfere with your goals and plans for the future. Another common source of trouble is to be afraid to tell their parents about the pregnancy. Others may worry that not only would suffer the wrath of their parents, but also withstand cruel gossip of friends, colleagues and community. A woman in a situation as this may feel very distressed thinking that a baby would interfere with going to college and achieving their career goals. The prospect of being a single parent can be frightening. I often hear women explain that they are afraid and feel alone, they are surprised that in their distress, who are considering abortion, thinking it may be best solution to their crisis, which is what we often find that their unexpected pregnancy.

To lessen their sense of discomfort may be useful to discuss their fears. Perhaps the fear of losing the respect of his parents and family, losing his college scholarship, and not having the freedom of others their age. It is important that a woman experiences a pregnancy incidental to discuss your situation, your thoughts and feelings. Because you probably feel scared and alone, she needs a safe place to tell their story and articulate their sense of danger. Most women are a great relief to tell her story aloud to someone else. By helping someone else understand what you are thinking and feeling is typically better understood.

It is important that a woman experiences an unplanned pregnancy to identify resources that could include access to medical care, good health, strength, energy, courage, vision, friends and parents who care. Hope and increase confidence and anxiety is reduced when it is recognized that resources can help to meet the challenges in the peer group pressure, delaying the university, or feel bad about disappointing their parents. With greater confidence and more hope that it begin to focus more on getting the support you need and work to find solutions that feel good about it.

She has offered training workshops for Total Lifecare Center Volunteers for many years. Total Life Care Center is an organization that offers pregnancy counseling, free pregnancy tests, ultrasound services and pre-natal clinics.

She received her BA from St. Thomas, and then went on to receive a Master of Business Administration from St. Thomas as well. She worked in the Personnel field for five years before returning to school to earn a Master of Arts in Psychology from St. Mary’s.

She enjoys working with adolescents, adults and couples helping them heal from past hurts, deal with depression or anxiety, or work their way through difficult life circumstances.

She speaks to groups about such topics as marriage enrichment, parenting issues, stress management, and provides counseling skills training.

She is a wife and mother of three teenage children.
