Metatarsalgia is the name given to pain in the foot in the forefoot region, which can be an annoying problem, and disabling pain in the foot bearing the metatarsals. It is a condition in itself, but an indication of an underlying pathology. The type of condition that can cause metatarsalgia or Morton's neuroma include metatarsalgia Morton (an overgrowth of nerve called a neuroma), an inflammatory arthritis and nerve inflammation. Anyone can suffer from this condition pain, but high-impact sports, and of middle age are risk factors.

The toe region is the focus of where efforts are directed to walk and run, with the first two metatarsal heads who suffer the greatest strength.
