Acupuncture has been part of medical care for millions of people for thousands of years. At a time when the western world still thought personal hygiene that would make you feel bad, China had a very sophisticated medical system that includes acupuncture as a primary form of treatment. Fortunately we are now in the catch and, recently, modern scientific standards have been applied to the evaluation of the effectiveness of acupuncture in a form acceptable to the Western world. Despite this apparent progress, there is still a good deal of controversy regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture and what standards of proof should be applied.
After extensive research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have released statements regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture. In 1997 the Consensus Statement for Development, the NIH noted that acupuncture may be useful as complementary or alternative treatments for stroke, headache, tennis elbow, post-operative nausea and vomiting, osteoarthritis, the effects of chemotherapy and other conditions. Also in the 2003 review Acupuncture Analysis and reporting in controlled clinical trials, WHO published a list of more than 100 conditions for which acupuncture may be useful.
Thus, the above facts are reflected in reassuring news of some of our medical scientists and researchers. On a more personal and practical, I can attest that after more than a decade of clinical experience, we have used acupuncture to provide relief to my patients, which together have presented a variety of ailments, too numerous to mention in this article. In general, if you are experiencing pain, anxiety or mild depression, digestive problems and fatigue, is likely that acupuncture will produce relief from their suffering. If your condition is outside these parameters, or if you have any questions, you should always talk to your chosen acupuncturist before any treatment is carried out. If the practitioner concerned has been successful in treating your condition with other patients, you may feel comfortable to go ahead. For this treatment is first acupuncture clinic and you, you should talk more fundamental and perhaps ensure that suggested treatment plan is acceptable both in terms of cost and duration of treatment.
OK, it works, but acupuncture is safe? In a word, YES! Acupuncture is safe. Rarely, some patients experience adverse reactions. About 1 in every 1000 patients experience slight temporary bruising, discomfort symptoms, or dizziness. If you are on high doses of anticoagulants or if your immune system is suppressed, you should discuss this with your acupuncturist and doctor.
In conclusion, I would like to consider the following study results. In a recent study of 34,000 acupuncture treatments reported in the British Medical Journal, only 43 adverse reactions were mild and no serious adverse effects were noted. In studies of commonly prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and celecoxib, adverse reactions were significantly higher! In fact, acupuncture is safer than most medicines sales free-you can find at the drug store. Of course, many of these resources provide people with significant relief for a variety of ailments, and am in no way suggesting to discontinue use, however, a good medicine strives to use the best help available at any given time to make and keep us healthy and pain free. However, after Having read the above facts, would not give the opportunity of acupuncture? I know it would be for me and mine.
