If you know how acupuncture works, you can then use it effectively as a nonstandard treatment for pain. An acupuncturist will insert very thin needles into specific points on your body. Acupuncture was first used in China nearly two millennia ago. It first began to get attention in United States in 1971, because it was effective in relieving postoperative pain. In this article, we’ll talk about the various theories as to just how acupuncture works.
Theories of Eastern Acupuncture
Chinese theories as to how acupuncture heals the human body differ greatly from those discussed in the West. According to traditional Chinese medicine beliefs, there are two opposing forces in nature, yin and yang. These also occur in the human body. Yin is very passive, while yang is very active.
Chinese medicine also believes that there is a continual flow of energy, known as Qi. This flow of energy has meridians as its pathways in the human body. Each meridian corresponds to an organ or area of the body. As long as energy flow or Qi is uninterrupted and flowing correctly, yin and yang have balance, and the body remains healthy. If Qi is blocked or disrupted in some way, this causes yin and yang to go out of balance. This in turn causes illness.
Qi can be accessed via approximately 400 acupuncture points on the body. These points are connected with specific meridians. These points occur near the surface of the skin and to restore proper Qi flow, an acupuncturist inserts very thin needles into these acupuncture points, utilizing various combinations.
Theories of Western Acupuncture
In the West, scientists explain how acupuncture heals the body very differently. One theory suggests that opioids are released into the central nervous system, meaning the spinal cord and brain, during acupuncture treatment. This reduces pain. Acupuncture has also been found to activate nerves in the spinal column that release neurotransmitters, which suppress pain. This has in fact been verified by one medical study that utilized images of the brain to show that acupuncture does in fact increase one’s pain threshold.
Yet another Western science theory is that acupuncture increases blood flow around the areas being treated. This increased blood flow supplies nutrients and/or can also remove toxic substances. In the West, scientists have also determined that acupuncture points are conductors of electromagnetic signals. Therefore, it is believed that acupuncture stimulates these acupuncture points, which in turn increases the speed of the electromagnetic signals. These signals in turn send natural painkillers, such as endorphins, to the parts of your body that have been injured. This, in turn, reduces the sensation of pain.
In Conclusion
The United States National Institute of Health issued a report with the title, “Acupuncture: the NIH Consensus Statement.” In that report, the NIH stated that acupuncture was effective in the treatment of variety of medical conditions. It was especially effective in the reduction of dental pain postoperatively. It also reduced nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or anesthesia. It has also been found to be effective in the treatment of asthma, carpel tunnel syndrome, lower back pain, osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps, stroke, addictions, and tennis elbow. The NIH’s report also stated that acupuncture’s side effects are less harmful than those from prescription drugs or surgery. Acupuncture is gradually being accepted in the mainstream as a bona fide medical intervention. Several medical schools, such as UCLA, have included acupuncture classes in their curriculum. In 1995, the United States Food and Drug Administration determined that Acupuncture Needles should qualify as medical instruments. Having the knowledge of how acupuncture works can lead to better pain management and ultimately healing.
