Texas Schools have implemented the Student Success Initiative (SSI) in their schools to help promote academic excellence in their students. SSI essentially is a program that consists of testing at the end of various grade levels (3, 5, 8, and 11) which determine whether or not your child is ready to move on to the next grade level. These tests, called the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) are supposed to determine how much your child has learned throughout the school year.

What Happens if My Child Doesn’t Pass the TAKS Testing in Texas Schools?

Several things can happen should this occur. State law has mandated that a child in Texas Schools can take the test no more than three times during the year. If he’s failed the first time, additional instruction will be given to him by his teacher in order to prepare for the next test. You will also be notified by the school that he hasn’t passed so you can take the necessary measures at home.

If he doesn’t pass the TAKS a second time, Texas Schools will form a Grade Placement Committee (GPC) that consists of a principal, a teacher, and a parent. The GPC will form an individualized plan for the student so he can receive the help he needs for the next test. The GPC will also determine whether or not he is ready to take his last opportunity at the TAKS test or if he needs some sort of alternate testing mandated by Texas Schools.

In the event that he fails the TAKS a third time, he will be automatically held back in his current grade unless a written request is received by Texas Schools no later than five days after getting the retention notice.

What Can I Do to Help My Child Pass the TAKS in Texas Schools?

The first thing you can do for your child is to maintain contact with his teacher throughout the school year. Texas Schools believe that an open line of communication can only help your child’s learning process. You and your child’s teacher can also make an appointment to sit down and go over the requirements for the test. Knowing in advance what your child needs to do can help him succeed not only in the TAKS but in his overall academic career in Texas Schools. You can also encourage learning in your child by engaging him at home. Talk to him about his subjects and ask him questions. You can also ask him to explain some of the material to you so he can demonstrate his knowledge.

Overall, there are a variety of ways you can help your child with the TAKS testing. While it is important to his advancement in school, it might not be an accurate way to judge his knowledge of the subject. Vigorous testing like the TAKS creates a lot of pressure on students, so much pressure that he might not perform to his usual standards. Texas Schools understands this for the most part, which is why they give students three chances to pass.
