Anyone who has belly fat knows and despises it – now a major U.S. study finds that it also increases the risk of migraine headaches in adults, especially the young and middle aged, giving you one more vital reason for losing belly fat.

The study is scheduled to be presented during the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting in Seattle later this spring. In a news release, study author Dr. B. Lee Peterlin of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia tells us, “These results, while still in the early stages, suggest that losing weight in the stomach area may be beneficial for younger people who experience migraine, and especially so for women.”

For those of you fortunate enough not to know about migraine, let me just say they are the most crushing, excruciating of headaches, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. Migraines affect an estimated 28 million Americans, with women, as reflected in this research, suffering more often than men.

There are medications for pain, nausea and some that may even prevent the headache in the first place. Alternative therapies can be used along with traditional treatments and may help you feel better. Acupuncture, craniosacral therapy or even yoga are natural ways that can help manage the condition.

Changes in diet (reducing dairy, sugar intake or glutens) may also make a startling difference in the number and severity of migraine headaches. The researchers recognized that the body tissue of men and women is distributed in different ways – women tend to carry their added baggage around the hips and thigh area, men carry it up front, in the belly. After menopause, women’s belly fat increases as a result of hormonal changes.

It’s this extra flab around the middle that seems to be so much more of a risk factor for both diabetes and heart disease, more of a danger in fact than being obese overall. The study found that age, gender and the distribution of body fat, i.e. more in the abdominal region, all affect migraine risk.

For the study the total size around the middle of the subjects was carefully measured. The level of obesity was also calculated using the familiar body mass index (a measurement involving weight and height). What the team found was that subjects aged 20 to 55 with larger waistlines were more likely migraine sufferers, as opposed to those in the same age group but with smaller waistlines.

Migraines were reported by 37% of the women, 20% of the men who had excess abdominal fat – better known as belly fat. For those without the flabbiness about the middle, 29% of women and 16% of the men reported migraines. Now if you were over 55, the waistline measurement wasn’t associated with migraine headaches in either sex, women or men. Curiously, the risk of the headaches actually went down among women over 55 who had larger waistlines.

As for others struggling to cope with migraine, take a look at that midsection and ask yourself if the extra dessert and the lack of exercise are worth the miserable pain of your headaches. If not, this study suggests that losing belly fat might help.
