The explicit teaching of decoding is necessary for building good reading skills. Once students are able to map sounds to the syllables, who are willing to say the entire map of the sounds. Before students are expected to do this, they need to know syllables and frequent irregularities. This can not be without explicit instruction wide where the steps are presented clearly and accurately and have enough opportunities to practice and assessment of all students.
The importance of decoding practice
