This is a condition that can definitely affect the quality of life of patients. It's a good idea to explain to patients that it is a condition often has a long history and not expect an overnight cure. Chiropractic is often useful for patients with frozen shoulder due to a characteristic of the disease is loss of range of motion in the shoulder that often leads to pain. Restore range of motion and function is a primary goal of chiropractic or any therapist treating a frozen shoulder.
The following is a brief description of frozen shoulder, stages, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. I hope you find it useful!
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
Frozen shoulder (FS) or (adhesive capsulitis) is characterized by a significant loss of range of motion in the shoulder and may be accompanied by pain and discomfort. FS can have four stages;
STAGE 1: Pre-adhesive Stage
No loss of range of motion (ROM) or very limited loss of ROM. The first signs of joint changes seen on arthroscopy. Possible appearance gradual pain.
STAGE 2, Adhesive acute stage
The first signs of shoulder ROM adhesions and some begin to ache. The pain may radiate including the promotion of shoulder stiffness.
STAGE 3: Stage of maturity
Reduction in the size of the synovial (joint) glenohumeral cavity and space (shoulder socket). The pain with movement, but often no pain with rest. Patients may also experience muscle atrophy (Wasting) around the shoulder.
STEP 4: Chronic Stage
Extreme ROM memory loss, significant decrease glenohumeral space. Then, often condition gradually improves. The patient may or may not recover all the ROM of the shoulders.
All natural history of a frozen shoulder can last from 4 months to 2 years!
How to get a frozen shoulder?
There is some disagreement, but are common causes, prolonged immobilization of the arm. This can include heart disease, thoracic surgery, mastectomy, arthritis, trauma and tendinitis Chronis shoulder.
FS tends to be more common in women, usually between 40 to 60 years. In addition, FS tends to be more common in the nondominant shoulder and sedentary.
How is it diagnosed a frozen shoulder?
See provider qualified health care. Much of diagnosis comes from its history and what to tell your doctor or therapist. I would recommend a chiropractor, physical therapist, physical therapist or doctor of medicine sports for the correct diagnosis.
How to treat a frozen shoulder?
During the acute phase of care should focus on pain management and inflammation in the shoulder.
It is important that the patient maintain as much ROM in the shoulder as possible. Stretch joint adaptations or chiropractic may be useful to improve or maintain joint ROM. Other forms of therapy can also help include: physiotherapy, physical therapy, massage, osteopath, sports medicine doctor or even acupuncture.
Aggressive care at home will also be important. Stretching and heat can be very useful. The appropriate home exercises and stretches must be received by your chiropractor or therapist.
Now that I have a frozen shoulder, what I can expect?
Remember, the patient's motivation will be a huge factor in the speed and extent of recovery. For victims who do not seek treatment you can expect about 60% of you to heal naturally within 2 years. (This means that people who do not seek treatment are at risk about 40% of still have symptoms lasting more than 2 years! OUCH!
Obviously, it is recommended that the patient seek treatment for frozen shoulder opposed the hope that things improve.
