Vitamin D, colloquially known as the “sunshine vitamin” has been connected to bone health for many years, as it is essential for calcium absorption in the gut, however recent

studies have shown potential for many more health benefits.

1. Weight Loss

Adequate levels of vitamin D can also help maintain proper weight by promoting leaning muscle mass and muscle strength and preventing increase in muscle fat. A relationship between deficiency of the vitamin and obesity exists, however it is unclear whether the deficiency leads to obesity. A recent weight loss study found participants with higher baselines of vitamin D and the precursor 25-hydroxycholecalciferol lost more weight over the 11 weeks.

2. Respiratory Health

Vitamin D can also help maintain lung function through the action of inhibiting pulmonary inflammatory responses while enhancing defense mechanisms. This action could explain the vitamin’s ability to protect against the common cold and seasonal flu. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to increase in asthma rates in children, with adequate levels helping to reduce attacks and use of medication. In addition those with low levels also had elevated IgE, a marker of allergy.

Another aspect of respiratory health is the ability to ward off the common cold and flu. A recent study assessed the blood level of vitamin D and viral infections during autumn and winter. Participants with higher levels of vitamin D 38 ng/ml either had no infection (83%) during the study period or if they did succumb the infection only lasted for 2 days. Participants with lower levels of vitamin D were sick for 9 days on average.

3. Enhanced Immune function

Vitamin D is essential for the activation of T cells which destroy foreign cells. In addition vitamin D induces antimicrobial peptide gene expression which help explains the ‘antibiotic’ effect in relation to immune function.

4. Reduced Risk for Diabetes

Deficiency of vitamin D inhibits insulin synthesis and secretion thereby playing a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes. Later onset of Type 1 diabetes can be linked to deficiency early in life. Hemoglobin Ac1 is a measure of blood sugar control and in one study low levels of vitamin D corresponded to uncontrolled blood sugar.

5. Reduced Risk of Cancer

Supplementation of vitamin D and calcium has been linked to reduced risk of various cancers, including colon, breast, prostate and skin. A recent study showed a 26% decrease risk of breast cancer with supplementation of 400IU per day.

6. Decreased Rate of Multiple Sclerosis

Vitamin D appears to control a gene linked to the development of MS. It is believed adequate amounts through supplements during pregnancy and early childhood may help prevent MS. MS is also more prevalent in Northern countries where there is less year round sunlight.

7. Reduced Risk of Heart Disease

A recent study of 31,000 people over the age of 50 were monitored for over a year and found that those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had 170% greater risk of heart attacks than those with the highest levels. Researchers also found low levels corresponded to an 80-per-cent greater risk of death and a 40-per-cent higher risk of coronary artery disease. Lowest disease risk was found with blood levels of 107 nanomoles per litre.

Vitamin D can be synthesized from sunlight, taken in supplement form or found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, dairy products and eggs.
