The National Geographic Bee, commonly known as the National Geography Bee is, as might be guessed named after The National Geographic Magazine. Actual sponsorship varies, but the 2007 National Geography Bee was sponsored by JPMorgan Chase. It is a scholastic competition aimed at schools which has children in any of the grades 4 through 8. The intent of the National Geography Bee is to help teachers foster an interest in the subject of geography and why it’s important in today’s world.

The National Geography Bee is open to public and private school students as well as students participating as part of a homeschoolers association. The student must not be over age 15 and must be participating in a curriculum consistent with the age level and classmates.

To enter the National Geography Bee, the principal of the school or the head of the homeschoolers association must send a letter on school or association letterhead along with a registration fee of $60 prior to October 15 most years. To participate in the National Geography Bee school level competition a minimum of six students must be present from the eligible grades.

For schools and homeschoolers associations who have met the eligibility and registration requirements of the National Geography Bee, a packet of test materials is sent in mid November of each year. Prior to the middle of January, the school level tests are completed and the winner at the school level takes a state qualifying test. Only the top 100 winners of each state go on to compete in state competitions for the National Geography Bee.

This year, the state finals of the National Geography Bee will be held on April 4, 2008 and the winner from each state will continue on the the National Geography Bee final to be held in Washington D.C. on May 20-21, 2008.

The 2007 National Geography Bee winner was a 14 year old home-schooled eighth grader from Redmond Washington. Washington state holds the lead for the number of winners of the National Geography Bee with five students holding the title from that state. The 2007 winner is only the second girl to win the competition since it began in 1989. Her prize is a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime subscription to the National Geographic Magazine.

Each year nearly 5 million students take part in the preliminary rounds of the National Geography Bee, working their way through the four levels of competition. In 2007 55 state and territory winners took part in the first day of competition. Ten finalists remained for the second day of competition. Second and third place finishers were from the states of Kansas and Tennessee, respectively. These two winners took home a $15,000 college scholarship and a $10,000 college scholarship. Other states and territories represented in the top ten finishers were Alaska, Colorado, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia.

The championship question required that the student know the name of the imperial capital of Vietnam for more than 100 years which is divided by a river of the same name. The answer of course, is Hue.
