Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition in which a person feels the urge to move the legs to get rid of an unpleasant sensation. Is may need to get up and move or walk to help relieve the uncomfortable sensations. RLS is a disease that has no known cause or cure known and usually affects middle-aged adults and seniors, but can start at any age. You can easily alter sleep patterns and make you feel sleepy and drowsy during the day. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may be able to offer relief of symptoms and help build your body to prevent or minimize future episodes.
The sensations in the leg can be characterized as:

 • Pain
 • Pull
 • Tracking
 • Tingling
 • Bubbles
 • Burning
 • Stiffness
 • Contractions

SPI is aggravated by stress or discomfort emotional and usually occurs at night at night, possibly lasting more than an hour. Symptoms are usually better during the day and with movement.

No tests or x-rays that doctors can perform to verify the SPI, but can perform blood tests to check for iron deficiency anemia, which can be found in some victims of SPI. You may also be associated with other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy and can be a side effect other medicines. Also suspected to be inherited in some patients. (You should consult your doctor if you suspect any of these is the case.)

Western SPI treatment consists of:

 • Stretching exercises
 • Hot baths
 • Massages
 • The drugs in some cases, to relax muscles and reduce stress

According to Chinese medicine, restless leg syndrome can be caused by several different patterns of disharmony in the body, including:

 • Lack of blood – when blood is unable to feed the muscles, tendons and ligaments successfully.
 • The stagnation of qi – the body's Qi (energy) is flowing through the meridians correctly. It is usually characterized by conditions that worsen with stress or emotional distress and are better with stretching.
 • Yin deficiency – when the essence of the body is exhausted and sometimes can be characterized by conditions that are worse at night.

Restless legs syndrome can be for any of these patterns or a combination thereof. All these models can be treated with specific acupuncture points on the body as a base formula of Chinese herbs, so can help to nourish the blood, yin and unlock the Qi. Both acupuncture and herbs can help reduce the sensations in the legs and help to return to sleep one night of sound.
