1215 – King John of England met his rebellious barons in a meadow at Runnymede, not far from where Windsor Castle now stands, and agreed to sign the Magna Carta, the first crucial step toward creating Britain’s constitutional monarchy. The barons had rebelled at being taxed to finance King John’s European wars unless they joined him. After they had taken London, the king was forced to listen. He bound not only himself but his “heirs, for ever” to grant “to all freemen of our kingdom” the rights and liberties detailed in the charter. Three dozen copies were handwritten, affixed with King John’s seal and publicly read throughout the realm. The document is widely regarded as the origin of English common law.
1752 – Benjamin Franklin proved the existence of electricity by flying a kite during a thunderstorm. Franklin and son William, seeing a thunderstorm approaching, took a kite with a metal spike on it and attached a string to which a key had been fastened. Franklin expected the key would absorb the electricity that ran from the metal spike down the wet kite string. For protection against electric shock, Franklin then attached to the key a short length of string, which he held in his hand. To further protect himself, Franklin stood inside of a shed so that the string he was holding would stay dry and be less conductive. When the lightning struck the kite strands of kite string stood straight up, as if electrified, and when Franklin rapped his knuckle against the key, the resulting electric shock proved his experiment had succeeded. The postscript was, however, that the most practical by-product of the experiment was the lightning rod which, by absorbing lightning strikes, saved many buildings from being destroyed by fire. And in London in 1769, British authorities were who were worried that many of their munitions plants, which were loaded with explosive gunpowder, were susceptible to just such lightning fires, asked Franklin, who was in London at the time, to advise them on the proper lightning rod design. Franklin did, and the Crown’s gunpowder and munitions were safe. So it was ironic when, 7 years later in 1776, both the gunpowder and the munitions were loaded on warships and sent to America to help the British fight Franklin and his rebellious countrymen in the American War of Independence.
1849 – Three months after leaving office, USA President James K Polk died. The President, who fought the war with Mexico to get California and the south-west, was a lifelong teetotaller. He died of cholera from drinking tainted water. Sam Houston, who founded Texas and was one of the great alcoholic opium addicts of American history, said of Polk’s death, “It is the natural end of all water drinkers”.
1878 – Eadweard Muybridge produced the first recognised motion picture. In 1872, Leland Stanford, the former governor of California, had a $25,000 wager that, when in full flight, a trotting horse has all its feet off the ground at the same time. To prove his theory he hired Muybridge to photograph his horse Occident running at full speed. Muybridge was unable to do so at the time but five years later he resumed the challenge. He set up twelve cameras at the Palo Alto racecourse with a mechanical device to trip the shutters in succession. On this day in 1878, he took his photographs which showed clearly that, unlike a galloping horse, at full speed a trotting horse has all four feet off the ground simultaneously. Leland Stanford won his bet.
1896 – An earthquake occurred of the coast near the Japanese port city of Sanriku. The earthquake, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale, triggered the formation a massive tsunami that devastated the city killing over 26,000 people. The tsunami waves reached an intimidating height of 25 metres (80 feet) as they crashed upon a crowd that had gathered in the city to celebrate a Shinto festival. The tsunami was also observed across the Pacific. In Hawaii, wharves were demolished and several houses were swept away. In California, a 3 metre wave was observed, according to the San Francisco Chronicle of June 16, 1896.
1924 – The Ford Motor Company announced that the 10,000,000th Model T had rolled off the assembly line. The next day the vehicle began a celebration trip from New York to San Francisco, with many parades along the way. It took Ford 7 years to produce the first million Model T’s but only 132 days to produce the tenth million.
