Acupuncture is used as a treatment for infertility. A little knowledge and research on your part can make it much more effective and enhance your understanding. The following checklist has facts you need to know before deciding if acupuncture and infertility treatment are right for you.

· Acupuncture has a long history (thousands of years) as a method for treating illness. It is a Chinese system that is gaining acceptance in western medicine.

· Acupuncture treats illness by influencing the flow of energy throughout the body. The energy flow is manipulated by the insertion of small needles at various points depending upon the illness being treated.

· The needles used in acupuncture treatment are disposable and used only once. This makes them sterile and clean. The insertion of the needles causes little or no pain.

· There is real science behind acupuncture. It has been show to release endorphins for pain and neurotransmitters to aid in healing.

· Acupuncture can be used to specifically treat infertility.

· Improved circulation from acupuncture helps form healthier eggs and to increase the thickness of the uterine wall. A thick uterine wall is essential in the early stages of pregnancy as the embryo lodges in the wall and takes nourishment from it.

· Acupuncture for infertility is often used as a part of an overall treatment plan. Success rates of in vitro fertilization have been show to be higher when accompanied by acupuncture treatments before and after the IVF procedure.

· As a gentle, non-invasive procedure acupuncture takes some time to work. It is not a one-time treatment. The changes to your body’s system take place gradually. It took time for your systems to become unbalanced and it will take some time for acupuncture to re-balance them.

· Acupuncture can help with the stress of the entire infertility situation. Infertility is a frustrating, stressful situation. The general therapeutic effects of acupuncture can help a couple cope. A couple can also know that by trying acupuncture they are keeping an open mind and doing everything they can.

· Many acupuncturists have experience dealing with infertility. Make sure yours does. Your doctor may be able to help evaluate acupuncturists or have a recommendation for you.

· Consult and inform your doctor if you would like to have acupuncture as part of your infertility treatment. Herbal therapy and acupuncture often go together and you doctor must know what herbs you are taking. Make sure you acupuncturist and doctor communicate and work together. Your acupuncturist must know if you may be pregnant as some treatment points can stimulate miscarriage.

· Acupuncture can be a cost effective infertility treatment. As with other professions the rates will vary and treatment may take several months. Compared with high tech in vitro fertilization however acupuncture is a bargain. Check to see if your insurance will help.
