We are now deep into the winter season so I'll keep writing about the prevention of colds and flu. We hope that you are already taking some preventive measures.

I know that you are hearing a lot about the flu vaccine H1NI in the news and have concerns about whether or not to vaccinate your family. You have to make that decision based on the best information available. What I'm not seeing on the news is how to stay strong and healthy. I have some recommendations based on years of experience and some recent studies of vitamin A deficiency in vitamin A and D. For example, a focus of Wisconsin, home to 275 children who had been tested for vitamin D deficiency and were supplemented with vitamin D. These were exposed to H1N1 in June 2009 when a new resident, who was ill with the H1N1 virus, he moved to the facility. Only one child came down with influenza H1N1. However, more than 70 staff members were not tested and not supplements vitamin D down with flu symptoms. People who become ill with the H1N1 virus and subsequently tested have shown a clear lack of vitamins A and D. Why have vitamin A and D you more susceptible to H1N1? Primarily, these vitamins have been shown to boost immunity.

If you have not been tested for levels of vitamin D, then I say why is one of the most important vitamins in the prevention of colds and flu.

Vitamin D is the "sunshine vitamin" because it does in the body when skin is exposed to sunlight. Many people do not get nearly enough sun exposure and if they do, have skin covered with sunscreen or clothing that prevents the formation of vitamin D. We have always known that vitamin D is the escort of calcium in the bones, but in the last decade, many more uses for vitamin D have been discovered.

Vitamin D helps maintain a healthy immune system. It can prevent colds and the flu. Think about when we are colds and flu and it is during the worst months of the year. Since the 1940's milk has been fortified with vitamin D, which was the first vitamin to be manufactured in a laboratory and added to our food supply. Vitamin D2 is made at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was very cheap to produce. The problem with the D2 is that it will resume making Vitamin D in the body and in high doses can be toxic. The RDA recommended daily allowance was established in 400IUs who happens to be extremely low. Now we find that because of our lack of vitamin D and the inferior quality of fortified foods, vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic proportions.

Three ways to get a sufficient level of vitamin D

1. First get a blood test for vitamin D may ask for proof of low cost to you. I asked about this at your next appointment or by e-mail.

2. Choose foods that contain vitamin D. They are fatty foods. Low-fat foods will not provide vitamin D. The food highest in vitamin D is cod liver oil. Other sources include oily fish in deep water, such as salmon, oysters, organ meats, egg yolk and butter. Fortified foods include dairy products and cereal grains, but the amounts added can be erratic, and if the form is vitamin D2 is not easily assimilated in the body. Moreover, these products must be fortified with fat eating fat-free milk will not help the level of vitamin D.

3. Take a supplement to achieve adequate levels of vitamin D. As I first mentioned getting a blood test which can help you determine your level of impairment. Then I can help fill in accordingly.

To get enough vitamin A, the easiest way to do that is by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables. Cod liver oil is also a source of vitamin A. It is important not to get too much vitamin A in supplement form as it can be toxic as Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables are the safest way to get vitamin A in your diet.

In addition to consuming more vitamin A and D think about what habits daily may be contributing factors to compromise their resistance to colds and flu:

o enough rest or trying to survive on 6 hours of sleep or less?
or Are you eating regularly or eating all day?
digestion, or working properly?
o Exercise regularly each week?
