As the last groan of the heat of summer approaches and August appears on our calendars, it's time once again to the schools to reopen for another year "Educate" our nation's youth. As a former teacher who recently left the profession, I shudder at the idea that education is not included!

Most districts in Texas praying at a shrine called "TAKS results." Teachers are hit as oxen teams to ensure that their students through "The" Test. Everything that happens in that classroom until spring (March to some, from April to others) focuses on "The Test." Various performance tests are administered from the day of the opening of the school and the examination date, the results are analyzed and placed on statistical graphs, and teachers work ten to twelve hours a day to prepare these reports for managers – no matter the preparation to teach their content areas and review lessons to include the results of the benchmarks. Why then should be a surprise that students are leaving at record levels? Teachers (also leaving the profession because they care about students, but feel helpless and frustrated by administrators who demand everything according to the test.) For teachers, it is no surprise. For administrators, is that teachers do not build relationships with their students.

Recently left the profession because it refers like a dinosaur. This dinosaur had only two students fail the test in 2008-09, a pass rate of 93%, which was better than most teachers in my department and the district average. Later, I made statements that establish relationships with my students, but no one has asked my students and parents what I felt, or asked to see data from a limited voluntary assessment administered to students asking the same question, among others, or asked how many e-mails I receive from alumni who proudly say where they are gone and thank me for "being there." Exhausted, frustrated, angry, plain the lack of support from administrators to teachers like me who left the profession after twenty two years. Many minority students and low income are interested in going to work because that is what their families need and value. The real truth is that at least 80% of all academic programs are designed to meet 30% of students – those who go to college.

Where are the programs that allow students ninth and tenth of being "collaborators" with increasing responsibilities as nurses, plumbers, electricians, people body repair center Beauty, laboratory technicians,? These "helpers" may be attracted to stay in school with the knowledge and encouragement when students eleventh grade, attendance, grading, and no discipline problems, which will become "real" professional craftsmen and students of the twelfth degree upon graduation, become certified, registered or traveling workers ready to earn a decent living for themselves and their families. Their math, English, reading and other academic content should be based on materials from these training paths to keep students interested in the "boring stuff." I doubt any of them will read Shakespeare or conjugated verbs in her adult life, why teach the students to the vocational track? Show them how to read their textbooks and technical manuals in place. Why not teach social studies by linking to the history of chosen vocation and expectations community? Why not teach science that is related to home improvement and chosen vocation?

These training programs not landfills must become, as often used in the past. Must have strict requirements for admission as passing grades, attendance 95%, and clean discipline record. The equipment and techniques must be taught the state of the art. An editor of training with a ruler and a pencil has no place in a career in CAD is the performance standard. Taught skills in Microsoft Office Word 2000 does not relate to the 2009 edition of Microsoft Word. auto mechanics must have the latest computer diagnostic equipment to work as students.

Yikes! It's time to return to classrooms across the country.
