Forget those Crystals

As a comprehensive health, keep an open mind to new methods of disease assessment and treatment of disease. My interest and pursuit of complementary or alternative medical therapies has led me to selectively incorporate some of what I found. For example, in my practice I embrace acupuncture for the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. In addition, traditional Chinese medicine herbal and western herbs have been very useful and marked with satisfactory results for most of our patients. However, there are many who claim to be practitioners of "alternative medicine" who pray on gullible and ignorant. This struck as never before when I attended and participated in a "Holistic Expo" in Atlanta in mid-September this year. I was a guest speaker on the topic of super nutrients in health and longevity and had a presence on the Expo floor to promote my line of dietary supplements and integration practice in Savannah. After viewing over 160 vendor booths and reviewing the list of items to be lectured I was appalled and horrified by what I saw.

To my surprise most of the "Professionals" of health present in this case (Mind-Body-Spirit) Expo appeared to be charlatans, false and charlatans. They offered no credentials and held no certification. There was no governing body that oversaw what offers or predicate. What surprised me was the number of visitors to the expo who were duped into believing that it was actually "healing" going on. I can see these people as artists, but certainly not healers. Many vendors offer their services or goods for sale on the spot. A typical "Divine Psychic reading" could cost up to $ 35. A channeling session with crystals was $ 5 per minute. And the people queuing for it. I was very uncomfortable and very out of place among this group. Seller to my left was composed of three "healers", a guy who was drawing sketches of spiritual, and two women, one a psychic, and the other a tarot card reader. Front of me was a seller of distance learning "institution" that offers "degrees" in nutrition, herbology, spiritual healing and Reiki. To my right was a "massage therapist / channeler / healer" who on several occasions had the victim on a table where aggressive and rub well wave rocks and crystals in the head and chest. Another booth offered spontaneous healing where practitioners pranced around their victim chanting and waving their hands in an effort to expel the evil forces that cause disease. They also showed a video on several occasions in a non-surgical removal of tumors in organs apparently through their skin with instantaneous healing.

Those in the stands (and in the lecture hall) purported to be capable of offering health advice incredible celebrities on the other side (famous channelers). Many psychics divine, and an offer of post of "aromatherapy" for people and pets. An American colleague native Indian garb spoke of "the meeting of its totem animal." Moreover, the other spoke of "Sonic Angel of Music" and "Turbo Tantra." A couple had people buying crystal balls set in a wooden box that can diagnose the disease with the name of "Chakra Life." While others offered means of "Accessing the Akashic Records."

Surprised to see such a large number of people interested in such statements "Alternative" healing lead me to ask any questions. Where modern medicine go wrong to force people to accept or believe in the irrational? What we have as physicians to push people to accept such silly ideas and odd alternative therapies? Why is the traditional medical contempt for these people? Yes There is genuine dislike of allopathic medicine and its practitioners. The rhetoric of listening to these posts is ridiculous. Many complaints about doctors are based on observations erroneous or casual, horror stories with a lot of "spin", and those with an ax to grind. Some complaints legitimate grounds, I must admit, but never strong enough to consider the alternative.

Have we sold or souls to pharmaceutical companies and have been charged? Have we been trapped pressures exerted on us by the current climate of health? Have we been embittered by our feelings toward public insurance reimbursements and private and medical malpractice suits? Still I have hope in our ability to turn this trend around and salvage our reputations with these people and discourage those seeking health from wasting their time, money and energy on these charlatans and quacks. If you chose to ignore our patients, this will only worsen move away from what doctors know that care is effective and shove them into the circus of sometimes harmful "caregivers."

As someone that binds to the complementary medical therapy justified, but not turning its back on traditional allopathic medicine, I think having a license to be a critical to write this article. I just accept what has been shown, after careful scrutiny, to be effective and useful as a treatment. Charles T. Sprading once said: "Knowledge is the understanding of the evidence establishes the fact, not belief that it is a fact."

Therefore, this is a call to those out there seeking healing and wellness. Do not give up the medical profession, despite a lot of negative press, we still offering the best health / patient care around with a proven track record. And despite the misinformation many of us out and maintain our Hippocratic Oath. Even some of us are open minded to realize our allopathic education does not give us all the answers and continually seeking new and better ways to care for our patients.
