The evaluation of graduate schools and the comparison of them just became much easier. In my three previous publications on this subject that many criteria that a diligent graduate school applicants could use to view the details on websites, as well as the question of the graduate program chairs of the various dimensions of a program. The aim of further research and comparison is to find a greater degree of comfort or "fit" with the program as a student may apply. With application fees averaging $ 75, it pays to be careful and deliberate to determine which programs should be taken into account. It is excellent programs easy to name the three programs in many disciplines, but seeing that also provide generous funding should not be left to the word of mouth or the creation of networks depend on the reputation that has grown stale. Now, an invaluable online resource is available that allows the evaluation so that it can not be easily so far.

After five years and numerous delays, the National Research Council has published an assessment based on data from the Research-Programs Doctorate in the United States. It is building a rigorous, detailed study and critical evaluation of more than 5000 programs at 212 universities. The study can be downloaded free [see # 1 below] and contains instructional tutorials, one addressed specifically to students, to help you use the database to explore and compare programs. The data in this document is not exactly "fresh", as was collected during the 2005 – 2006 academic year, but remains the best information we have, but it is also true that changes in the ranking of schools proceed very slowly, so while there is some reason to be skeptical about some of the results, it is unwise to reduce the results of this study as being too skeptical.

Students will probably find the following site [see # 2 below] even more useful than the site of the NRC. PhDs.org is an independent organization that has used data from the Evaluation of Research-Programs PhD to create a site where users of the Evaluation of graduate programs can be classified according to their own priorities. This site allows you to sort and rank universities on two levels and the use of multiple variables to achieve a detailed overview of the program [s] you are considering. For example, in what would the label of "first level" can be sorted by size [varying], by the nature of gender [/ minority] faculty, and tuition costs and the number of funded students. In the "secondary" may classify items using a scale that allows you to check what is important to you [1 to 5] and explore issues such as productivity of faculty research [publications, grants, awards], student outcomes [Time grade placement, work scholars] and the resources dedicated to the students [for professional development, health insurance, employment, education training].

In summary these two sites offer tools that allow you to acquire a level of transparency that would have been impossible to achieve, even if you regularly called graduate school deans or graduate chairs the program. The amount of information available is enormous, the sites can take some time to negotiate, but what can mine these databases data is invaluable.
